Village of Santo Espírito
Most important village in the south-eastern part of the island is Santo Espírito with its attractive church of Nossa Senhora da Purificação, boasting a beautiful Baroque façade and surprising black basalt sculptures. Built in the 16th century and modified and enlarged in the 18th century, this church is one of the most harmonious structures of the island and according to legend it is standing on the site where the first Holy Spirit Mass was celebrated in the archipelago. Other interesting sites are the Santa Maria museum with displays of items and artefacts relating to the island’s weaving and pottery traditions. The museum also serves for expositions of local artists. Also deserving a visit is the Cooperativa de Artesanato de Santa Maria, where all handicraft items on display are still made in the traditional way. Santo Espirito is also the departure point for a couple of pleasant walks providing beautiful sceneries and excellent panoramic views.
